Gears of War - First Impressions

gears1I know Gears 1 isn’t exactly new but I’m not one to jump into a franchise half way through. OK I did with Halo but I would have preferred to have played the previous games before sticking in Halo 3. With Gears I’ve doing it my way, 1 comes first and here are my first impressions of it.

I’m a down to earth sorta guy and thats how I prefer my gaming, so figting aliens isn’t exactly my ideal game but I’ll give anything a go. A few checkpoints into Gears probably isn’t enough to give it a justified review so I’ll just stick to what I know or have seen so far.

The aiming was the first thing I noticed. Its fast and frantic. Other games I’ve played recently including GTA and CoD both have a slow scrolling type aiming control where it takes you a while to go from one side of the screen to the next, Gears is quite the opposite and while I am totally no good with the faster paced aiming at the minute it does add to the franticness of trying to fight off aliens or whatever they are.

The graphics are by no means awesome but from an older game I wouldn’t expect total HD in my face sorta stuff.

I like a story and so far I have been given very little, I’ve been taken out of a cell so many days after something day. Whether I skipped the intro by getting button happy I’m not sure but as long as the story is filled in as we go a long that will be good enough for me.

So, I guess Gears 1 could lead to the purchase of Gears 2. We’ll have to see how it goes…….

Still Lost

lost

So we’re 4 episodes into the 4th season of Lost with only 30 more episodes remaining. Any suggestion the trailers gave us that the answers were coming have only been met with more questions. Most of these came in the last episode.

So is Gin not dead?

When and who are the people who in the rafts?

What is making the light flash?

And where exactly is the island now?

The more I think about it the more questions I have and the more things I remember happening in previous series that just seem to have been forgotten about. I remember watching Alias, another show from JJ Abrams and there being a big thing about the continuity. I’m hoping that this hasn’t been abandoned for Lost and that there is one story line and the questions will be answered.

My gut feeling is that all the questions will not get answered. Things from the first 2 series will just be left for you to wonder about and it will wrap up what is happening now and maybe the odd other tie in will answer some other questions.

Lets hope we get some answeres soon but the series is pretty good at the minute.

I completed GTA IV

gtaI don’t know whats come over me lately, I seem to have this obsession with completing any game I start. First it was Zelda on the DS followed by both Cod 4 & 5 and then I went back to GTA IV which I have been playing on and off for the last 6 months or so.

I have played on pretty much all of the GTA games starting with 1 & 2 on the PC followed by 3 and San Andreas on the Playstation. I never really got into San Andreas that much and I didn’t play the portable Vice City Stories. When IV came out I snapped it up and instantly started to play the game. I enjoyed it and thought the gritty story line was great. There are still things I would like to see improved but thats for another post.

The first few times I found myself playing the game I was the nice Nico, trying to please everyone and be everyone’s friend. That more recently gave way to hanging up the mobile and missing the drinking and strip bar session in search of new missions. I noticed that a 2 hour session on the game could turn into 6 or 7 missions being completed instead of the old 2 or 3 with all the trips and adventures inbetween. This lead me to the final mission rather quickly and after a few attempts I completed the game, got the credits and everything.

I will still play this game as it is one you can easy spend a night playing and get absolutly no where, whether you are in search of crazy jumps or just exploring the massive map or fighting off cops and SWAT it still makes a great game without the missions. The do anything, anywhere, anytime freedom it gives you is what more games need in my eyes.

Anyway, the next game I will try to complete will probably be Bioshock - wish me luck!

Whats your Set-up?

When it comes to watching TV and playing video games the whole experience can come down to your Entertainment Set up. Mine is a pretty simple one, I have a:

  • 37″ Samsung HD Plasma TV
  • Freecom MediaPlayer 35
  • Xbox 360 (Halo Edition) hooked up via HD Component
  • Nintendo Wii
  • Sky Viewing Box
  • DVD Player - which barely gets used

This could be drastically improved with bigger screen, blu-ray capabilities and surround sound. But I’m not complaining as I haven’t had the plasma long. It would be nice to have a set up like one of these:

How could I miss all 16!

PC World has a list of 16 of the best games from 2008 that you didn’t play, and do you know what, I didn;y play any of them.

Here’s the list:

http://www.pcworld.com/printable/article/id,159037/printable.html

Boomblox and deBlob are the only ones I can honestly admit that I almost bought/purchased/played but I didn’t so the first half of ‘09 will be spent making sure I at least check some of these out and the latter half making sure I don;t miss the total list that appears next year. Oh. Of course while keeping up with the games I did “or should’ve” played.

How many of those did you play?
